What is Truss Rod?

A truss rod is a metal rod (typically steel or a combination of metals) that runs along the neck of an acoustic guitar underneath the fretboard. Its primary purpose is to provide structural support to the guitar neck and to allow adjustments to compensate for the tension created by the strings.

Functions of a Truss Rod:

1. Counteracts String Tension:

- Guitar strings exert significant tension on the neck, especially when tuned. A truss rod counterbalances this tension to prevent the neck from warping or bowing.

2. Adjusts Neck Relief:

- Neck relief refers to the slight curvature or bow in the neck. Adjusting the truss rod can create more or less curvature, affecting the action (the height of the strings above the fretboard) and playability.

3. Supports Structural Integrity:

- Without a truss rod, the constant tension from the strings could cause the neck to warp permanently.
